Sometimes the difficulty with meditation is due to the conflict that arises in the mind when one feels that he or she must stop the internal dialogue of thoughts that come rushing into the head just when you wish them to be still. This creates conflict which further enhances the fragmentation process.
The problem is that you enter into the 'RITUAL' of meditation with predetermined expectations of achieving an pre-imagined state of 'Nirvana', which limits your experience to your limited expectations alone.
Meditation is an "emptying" process where you welcome ALL of the noise that floods into your head without resistance, and without judgment. You allow all of the crazy thoughts and mental distractions to flood into your head while your "observer" within simple observes these thoughts without labeling or passing judgment on what is being observed. This detaches the observer (you) from the rogue thoughts you are observing, and lessens their connection to you.
It is your resistance, judgments and conflicts with your thoughts that keep you connected to them. The more you practice detachment without judgment, the more these thoughts lose their strength and influence on your meditative state, and the more tranquil your experience each time you enter that state.
But this is a process that cannot be rushed. It takes great patience to detox from one's addictions to thought. But the more you practice the principle of non-attachment, the less dense your residual thoughts become until they disappear from your meditative experience altogether...
